Together with my students, I work with local disability advocates to serve people with disabilities in Southern California, including hosting educational tech workshops, serving as human guides to blind individuals, and making direct donations.
I organized the first Accessing STEM in Higher Education outreach event in 2024. Now in its third year, our program has supported hundreds of local blind and low vision high schoolers and educators, to inspire and prepare students to pursue higher degrees in STEM fields. We lost our funding in 2025. See how you can pitch in so we can continue this important work.
University
When I serve on committees for my department, my school, and my university, I actively seek to promote disability awareness and anti-ableist policy change.
In 2023, I chaired the Disability Cultural Center Task Force, which articulated a vision for a disability-focused student resource center on campus. In 2024, my service on the Disability Funding Advisory Board was instrumental to allocating funds to found the center, slated to open in 2025.
Research Field
I regularly volunteer with the Association for Computing Machinery to produce more accessible publications, host more accessible research meetings, and manage robust peer-review processes for accessible computing research.
As the inaugural Adjunct Chair for Accessibility on the Executive Committee for the ACM SIGCHI research community, I developed vision and mission statements, convened a 15-person committee, and implemented new programs to increase publication accessibility.
